THE FREEDOM OF BROKEN CHAINS
“I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” Psalm 32:5
Recently, a bright young boy in our church looked at a famous hymn called “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.” He noticed the line, “He breaks the power of cancelled sin.” He used logic and asked, “If a cancelled sin is already a good thing, wouldn’t breaking it be a bad thing?”
His smart question made me think. I talked about it with my colleagues, and we discovered a beautiful meaning. The song is not talking about breaking the sin itself. God has already cancelled and forgiven that debt. Instead, Jesus breaks the power that old sins try to hold over your life.
This matches Psalm 32:5, where King David writes: “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”
Notice how God helps you in two ways here. He does not just forgive the bad things you did. He also takes away the inner pain, the heavy guilt, and the sad feelings left behind.
Even after God forgives you, you might still feel bad about your past. You might still feel shame or follow old, bad habits. But telling God the truth brings you total freedom. When you talk to Him, God does more than erase your bad record. He heals your broken heart.
You can hold your head high today. God has broken the chains of your past. You are not defined by your old mistakes. Walk into your future with joy, because Jesus has set you free, and the power of your cancelled sin is completely gone.
