He is the light that brings us home
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
And the darkness can never extinguish it.
(John 1:4-5)
The Christmas season brings a wonderful rhythm to our year. The year is almost over. Maybe you say, “thank goodness!” Or maybe, “I’m not ready for 2025 to be over yet.”
Ether way I am thankful for this punctuation mark at the end of the year. I am thankful that life doesn’t just go on and on. We have these moments, these cycles and seasons to help us stop and reflect. And also to help us move on to new things.
Remember 2020 when COVID completely messed up our weeks and months. There were lock downs and so many changes that we wondered if life would ever be the same again, but Christmas came in 2020 just as it had for all the years before. It was a relief and such a comforting place to arrive to.
Here we are at the end of 2025. Life has gone on. We have found healing. We have had new adventures. We have had many more things to celebrate.
Christmas is such a great way to celebrate at the end of the year. Like a lighthouse it calls us home to God’s story. It reminds us who we are and who our God is. It reminds us that our God came down into our world —into our time and space— to help us. Jesus has come to rescue us and redeem us. He is the light that brings us home. And the darkness can never extinguish it.
